Three cross-border gaps most expat investors don't know they have
US tax on US-listed shares, the UK inheritance tax that follows you after you leave, and UAE accounts that lock until a court order. Check all three for your own situation in two minutes.

How this is calculated
US estate tax. Non-US persons owe US estate tax on US-situated assets, including shares of US companies wherever they are held. The executor must file Form 706-NA if those assets exceed $60,000. Tax uses the IRS unified rate schedule (18% to 40%) minus a $13,000 credit. Deductions, gifts and treaty relief are not modelled. IRS: nonresidents with US assets, Form 706 instructions, Table A.
UK inheritance tax tail. Since 6 April 2025, anyone UK resident for 10 of the previous 20 tax years is a long-term resident, with worldwide assets in scope. After leaving, that lasts 3 tax years for 10 to 13 years of residence, rising by one year per extra year, up to 10. People who left before 6 April 2025 fall under transitional rules. UAE succession. UAE bank accounts, including joint accounts, are frozen once the bank learns of the holder's death, until a court order. DIFC wills are available to non-Muslims and each type covers a defined set of assets. DIFC Courts Wills FAQ.
